Strengthening democracy through legitimate elections in Ukraine
When the next elections are held in Ukraine, this will be crucial for the country's development and reconstruction. However, holding elections also harbours risks for the Ukrainian authorities. One of the challenges is enabling the millions of refugees eligible to vote to cast their votes online. For this reason, the Ukrainian electoral commission has been working with the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IDEA) since 2022.
The organisation IDEA aims to develop comparative knowledge and support democratic reforms, particularly in electoral processes, constitutional development, political participation and representation. As a permanent UN observer IDEA is active in 60 countries.
With its contribution, Liechtenstein is supporting the IDEA project "Building expertise and capacity of state agencies in Ukraine for electoral risk identification and management", which involves strengthening the Ukrainian electoral commission in developing and implementing its own electoral risk register and risk management. This includes training on risk data analysis and the development of a cross-agency prevention strategy.
Project goals
Supporting the Ukrainian electoral commission in building capacity to organise elections, in particular with the possibility of online voting.
Development and implementation of an electoral register and electoral risk management using the IDEA tool for electoral risk management adapted to the needs of the Ukrainian authorities.
Conducting training on risk data analysis and developing a multi-agency prevention strategy.
