Securing the water supply after the dam disaster
During the Ukraine war, the Kakhovka dam on the Dnipro River was destroyed by an explosion in June 2023. The reservoir was completely emptied and villages and towns in the Kherson and Mykolaiv districts were massively flooded. People had hardly any access to clean drinking water, the risk of communicable diseases increased, and agriculture was also affected. The Southeast European Initiative (SECI), which is active in the region, further expanded its emergency aid in response to the destruction of the dam. The SECI initiative, which was founded as part of the OSCE, is already active on the ground in the areas of water, hygiene, sanitation, nutrition, health and financial assistance.
In the Kherson and Mykolaiv region, SECI is supplying people with clean drinking water by delivering mobile water filtration systems to the affected areas, among other things. It is also providing generators to secure the power supply for water pumps, cold chains and other important processes. With its contribution, Liechtenstein supported the purchase, logistics, and distribution of this necessary technical equipment in 2023 and 2024. In 2024 Liechtenstein increased its financial support, as the hardship faced by the people, who are exposed to rocket and drone attacks on a daily basis, remains high in this region.
