Saving people in Sudan from hunger
Violent conflicts have been raging in the African country of Sudan for years. In April 2023 the clashes broke out again. As a result, nearly 25 million people are dependent on humanitarian aid, more than half of them children. In addition, six million people have been forced to leave their homes and are seeking refuge in other parts of the country, while around one million people have fled to the neighbouring countries of Chad and South Sudan.
The United Nations World Food Programme, WFP, warns of a devastating famine, as around 18 million people do not have access to enough food, especially in the combat zones. Since the crisis in Sudan is hardly covered in the media, aid organisations are not receiving sufficient financial resources.
Liechtenstein is therefore supporting the WFP's activities, which include food packages, cash assistance and climate-adapted wheat seeds and fertiliser. Especially children up to the age of five and pregnant and breastfeeding women are to be provided with food supplements as part of the programme in order to treat and prevent malnutrition.
Project goals
Humanitarian emergency aid for the population threatened by hunger and malnutrition in Sudan in the form of food parcels, cash support, climate-adapted wheat seed and fertiliser.
Treatment and prevention of malnutrition in children between six and 59 months as well as pregnant and breastfeeding women with the help of nutritional supplements.
