Refugee aid under unstable conditions in Lebanon
For many years, Lebanon has been the country with the highest number of refugees per inhabitant. The number of refugees is estimated at 1.5 million Syrians and over 11‘000 members of other nationalities. Lebanon is politically unstable.
The consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic and an explosion in the port of Beirut in 2020 have led to a tense economic and social situation. More than half of the population is dependent on humanitarian aid. Lebanon therefore needs the support of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, UNHCR, to care for the large number of refugees.
The UNHCR has been cooperating with the Lebanese government for years and helps in a wide range of areas. This includes protection and accommodation for refugees, basic healthcare and access to clean drinking water and sanitary facilities, cash assistance and school education for children. The UNHCR is working on site to strengthen the communities that take in refugees and to help them become more independent. With its support, Liechtenstein can support the UNHCR's activities in Lebanon, which is now even more affected by the violent Middle East conflict.
