LieLa language courses for refugees and locals in Türkiye

In 2019, Liechtenstein launched the language project "Turkish and English Language Learning Programme as a tool for Empowerment and Social Cohesion II" for Syrian and Iraqi refugees and locals in Türkiye. The project, which aims to teach refugees and locals English and Turkish, was developed in cooperation with the Liechtenstein Languages Association and the NGO RET International.

The launch planned for 2020 was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, by autumn 2022, it was already clear that around 1‘300 people would complete the English and Turkish courses by the end of the year. With a share of 63%, particularly women benefited from the project. The courses broke down language barriers, promoted social and cultural integration and reduced obstacles between refugees and locals.

Due to the positive results and local acceptance, the course programme, which has been rated as a "lighthouse project", will be continued for the next few years. In addition to the expansion of the language courses, job-specific language courses are planned, e.g. for the care sector or the bakery trade, in order to strengthen the professional integration of refugees.
