A project by Office for Foreign Affairs
Laying the foundations for refugee aid around the world
In 2022, around 61 million people worldwide were fleeing within their own countries. According to the Geneva Refugee Convention people that are internally displaced due to violent conflicts or natural disasters do not count as "refugees". They therefore do not receive the same attention as people fleeing to other countries. The "Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre", IDMC, tracks the movements of internally displaced persons worldwide. Founded in 1998, the institution provides information about the needs of these people and the causes of their displacement.
The IDMC records refugee movements in over 55 countries and provides important data for governments and institutions such as the United Nations. Liechtenstein, which has long been campaigning internationally for better protection of internally displaced persons, also regularly uses IDMC data for its own statements and positions. With this project, Liechtenstein significantly helps laying the groundwork that enables states to make decisions about where to provide aid.
