A project by Office for Foreign Affairs
Implementation of rules for subsidised fishing worldwide
In 2022, the 164 member states of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) agreed on a joint, multilateral agreement to limit fisheries subsidies. The planned agreement is intended to contribute to regulated deep-sea fishing and protect the most endangered fish stocks based on sustainability regulations.
Developing and least developed countries can receive technical assistance and capacity building support. This is for example made possible through a voluntary financing mechanism.
This fund is being created in cooperation with organisations such as the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation, the World Bank and the International Fund for Agricultural Development. With its contribution, Liechtenstein can support the development of the fund structures at an early stage and help with the implementation of the planned agreement on fisheries subsidies.
Project goals
Establishment of a fund to support developing countries and least developed countries (LDCs) to implement the WTO agreement on fisheries subsidies.
Support financing mechanisms that enable technical assistance and capacity building in these countries to implement the rules and regulations of the agreement.
Regulating deep-sea fishing and combating illegal, unregulated and unreported fishing worldwide as well as protecting highly endangered fish stocks.
