Humanitarian aid for the people of Nagorno-Karabakh

The conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan over the Nagorno-Karabakh region has been going on for years. In the course of an escalation in September 2023, many people were killed and injured and had to leave their homes. Since December, the Lachin Corridor, the only road connecting Armenia with Nagorno-Karabakh, has also been blocked by Azerbaijan.

As a result, the Armenian population in the region is cut off from basic goods and services such as essential medicines. An explosion at a fuel depot injured numerous people, putting the hospitals under severe strain. The International Committee of the Red Cross, ICRC, which has been present on the ground since 1992, stepped up its aid programme in the renewed conflict situation.

In cooperation with the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, the ICRC provides emergency medical aid and supplies people with food, water and other necessary goods. The ICRC also helps to search for missing persons and tries to ensure that the human remains of victims are treated appropriately. Hidden mines and unexploded ordnance are dangers in the ground that the ICRC needs to make the population aware of. With its contribution, Liechtenstein is providing valuable support for the ICRC in its important but still underfunded mission.
