Helping refugees in the forgotten conflict region of Sudan
Violent clashes have broken out again in crisis-stricken Sudan in April 2023. Since then, almost 8 million people have been displaced and nearly 25 million people are dependent on humanitarian aid. Despite this double burden of crises in Sudan and its neighbouring countries, the current conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East are dominant, resulting in less donations for Sudan.
This makes it all the more important to support the aid programme of the International Organization for Migration (IOM). It provides a wide range of services for migrants in Sudan. For example, IOM provides protection and shelter, offers access to clean drinking water, hygiene and sanitary facilities and takes care of healthcare and nutrition. IOM also provides psychosocial support for the often traumatised people.
The organisation, which is affiliated with the United Nations, also helps to transport refugees from conflict zones or return them to their homes. Through humanitarian border management, it enables people in need of protection to be better recognised and their rights to be protected. Liechtenstein is devoting its attention to this forgotten conflict region and supports the IOM’s humanitarian aid programme.
