Food assistance for millions of people in Afghanistan
Since the Taliban took power in August 2021, the situation in Afghanistan has continued to deteriorate. State authorities are unable to provide basic services, causing the humanitarian situation to worsen. Almost 30 million people, more than half of them children, are dependent on humanitarian aid. Millions of people are food insecure and over three million children are acutely malnourished.
The World Food Programme, WFP, has been providing food assistance in Afghanistan since 1963. WFP activities include food aid, cash transfers, specialised food aid for children and pregnant women, creating livelihoods and school feeding programmes.
However, due to massive financial difficulties the WFP had to cut back on food aid. From September 2023 to February 2024 alone, the programme was in need of 1 billion USD to provide millions of people with food every month. With its contribution, Liechtenstein therefore wants to ensure that as many people as possible can be provided with vital aid.
Project goals
Securing food supplies for population groups in Afghanistan threatened by hunger and malnutrition.
Securing specialised food aid for children and pregnant women as well as school meals.
