Emergency aid for flood victims in Libya
On September 10th in 2023, storm "Daniel" caused severe flooding and mudslides in north-eastern Libya. Two dams broke on the Mediterranean coast and the infrastructure was severely damaged. Many thousands of people died, thousands were reported missing and tens of thousands had to flee. Among the victims were many refugees from Syria who had sought asylum in Libya, a large number of whom were not yet officially registered.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, UNHCR, is an organisation that has been providing aid in Libya for many years. The UNHCR works closely with national and international partners to provide aid as effectively as possible.
Initially, relief supplies for 5‘000 people were brought to the displacement camp in Benghazi, an emergency team was sent to the disaster areas to support the people, and an emergency hotline was set up. With its contribution, Liechtenstein is providing a portion of the financial support that is urgently needed to make sure the aid project can continue.
