Development work in Tanzania jeopardised

Cyclone Hidaya swept across East Africa in early May 2024. The severe flooding in southern Tanzania also affected many peasant families, who have been supported by the Liechtenstein Development Service (LED) as part of the SWISSAID country programme since 2018. SWISSAID is providing emergency aid in the region and distributing food, hygiene packages, seeds, water pumps and tools for rebuilding fishponds, fields and houses.

SW SWISSAID has been present in Tanzania for many years, which streamlined the rapid coordination between partners and the development of the emergency aid plan.

Liechtenstein is supporting this mission to alleviate the consequences of the floods and to overcome setbacks in the joint development work of LED and SWISSAID. The aid also helps to utilise valuable synergies between emergency and reconstruction aid and development cooperation.

Project goals

Emergency and reconstruction aid for the population in the areas affected by flooding in southern Tanzania.

Affected households in the Kilwa district are being supported with food and hygiene parcels.

Peasant families in the SWISSAID project areas supported by the LED in Lindi and Mtwara receive seeds, juvenile fish, water pumps and tools for reconstruction.
