Creating livelihoods in Iraq
For many years Iraq has been one of the most crisis-ridden countries in the world. Social tensions, ethno-religious conflicts and corruption still prevail. The fight for resources and territorial claims, as well as cells of the so-called "Islamic State" that are still active, contribute to an unstable situation in the country.
The UN estimates that around 2.5 million people, including over one million children, are dependent on humanitarian aid. Many homes have been destroyed or are uninhabitable, families have been separated and countless people are suffering from war trauma. While public sympathy for the situation in Iraq has declined significantly, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) remains committed to the country.
On the ground, the ICRC is working to support prisoners, locate missing persons, help people meet their basic needs and regain their livelihoods. The ICRC is also helping to rebuild the water supply and other important infrastructure.
Medical care and the psychological and psychosocial rehabilitation of the population are part of the ICRC's activities in Iraq as well. With its contribution, Liechtenstein is supporting one of the ICRC's largest operations worldwide, whose financial requirements of around 80 million Swiss francs are only partially covered.
