Assistance for refugees in and from Afghanistan

Since the Taliban took power in August 2021, the humanitarian and human rights situation in Afghanistan has deteriorated significantly. State authorities are often unable to fulfil their basic tasks, which exacerbates the plight of the already vulnerable population.

In addition, clashes between various tribes continue and people are still being displaced. There are currently over 5.5 million Afghan refugees, mainly in Iran and Pakistan. An estimated four to seven million internally displaced persons are seeking refuge within Afghanistan. There are no exact figures, since only a few international organisations have access.

One of them is the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC). The independent humanitarian organisation provides a wide range of support for refugees in Afghanistan and neighbouring countries. The NRC's valuable assistance includes protection from violence, providing accommodation and building camps, access to clean drinking water and sanitary facilities as well as food security.

The NRC enables displaced people to earn their own income. It also provides access to education for children, information and legal advice. Liechtenstein supports the NRC in its activities in Afghanistan, which last year provided aid for around 850‘000 refugees.
