Sustainable agriculture for the countries of the Sahel region

The Sahel region comprises the countries of Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania and Niger. All five countries face complex challenges, including food insecurity with malnutrition and poor basic services as well as political and economic instability. Furthermore, there are climate and environmental problems, such as soil degradation, recurrent droughts and irregular precipitation. Enormous investments are needed to transform the barren land back into healthy ecosystems.

For this reason, the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has developed a resilience programme for the Sahel countries. It is based on sustainable land and water management and includes measures for soil remediation and water supply. The aim is to make infertile land usable again. The measures are complemented by school meals, nutrition programmes and support for peasants.

By 2023, more than 280‘000 hectares of land had already been restored and the resilience of over three million people to environmental shocks had been improved. A study shows that around 4.8 million tonnes of carbon can be sequestered by 2030 through sustainable agricultural practices. Liechtenstein supports the WFP's programme to offer new and sustainable prospects to people in the Sahel.

Project goals

Implementation of the resilience programme of the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP): planning of water catchment areas and soil rehabilitation, including by means of stone and earth walls, water catchment ditches along contour lines, improved water access for horticulture, composting, rehabilitation and excavation of water basins and water infrastructure.

Help the population by providing school meals, nutrition programmes and support for peasants.

Reducing the population's vulnerability regarding environmental disasters.
