A project by Liechtenstein Development Service (LED)
Strengthening women rice parboilers in Burkina Faso
Within the National Union of Women Rice Parboilers Cooperatives of Burkina Faso (UNERIZ), this project aims to accelerate and expand the process of empowering women, especially young females, rice parboilers. Parboiled rice is made by partially boiling paddy rice in its husk through a special process, which increases its nutritional quality.
The economic and political situation of women is strongly influenced and usually hindered by the community and family environment in which they live. Disadvantages for women in terms of participation and representation, capacity building, access to and control of resources and production factors are particularly relevant. This project not only improves the economic and social status of women, but also contributes to the food security of the population.
This is achieved by increasing the quantity and quality of parboiled rice, which the women rice parboilers market themselves as part of their UNERIZ membership.
Project goals
Strengthening the productive, technical and financial capacities of the members of four cooperatives of rice producers and four cooperatives of women rice parboilers.
Ensuring the supply of paddy rice to the parboiling centres in sufficient quantity and quality.
Strengthening the marketing and awareness of parboiled rice in three large urban centres.
