A project by Office for Foreign Affairs

Protecting children on the run in Bosnia-Herzegovina

More and more migrants are fleeing to Bosnia-Herzegovina, and many of them end up staying there. In 2023 alone, the Office for Foreigners' Affairs registered 34‘409 people, more than 11% of whom were unaccompanied minors. Asylum-seeking children have special needs on their journey. Many of them run the risk of being neglected and exploited or becoming victims of abuse and human trafficking.

With its project "Protection and emergency care for vulnerable and unaccompanied minors", REFUG II, Caritas Switzerland is protecting the welfare of children and young people and ensuring that their immediate needs are met. At the reception centre in Sarajevo they are provided with food, drinking water and clothing. They are given access to sanitary facilities, medical care and protection from violence, they receive psychosocial care, counselling, language courses and support in their search for asylum.

REFUG II is based on the innovative NEXUS approach, according to which fair and sustainable solutions are developed in co-operation. As a result, rights are protected, target groups are integrated into society and long-term prospects are created. Liechtenstein is making the largest financial contribution to the success of this project, which is also supported by Switzerland, the Netherlands, Germany and private organisations.
