Emergency aid after earthquakes in Syria and Türkiye
On February 6th, 2023, a devastating earthquake struck southern Türkiye and northern Syria. Another strong earthquake followed on the same day. Tens of thousands of people lost their lives in the affected region. More than a hundred thousand people were injured. Many buildings, including residential buildings and hospitals, collapsed. The water and energy supply as well as the sewage system partially collapsed in the affected provinces.
In order to provide humanitarian aid quickly, Liechtenstein supported "RET International", an independent organisation that has been active in the region for years and is well connected. In partnership with the local NGO "LEAP Turkiye", rescue teams were able to provide emergency aid in the disaster area to supply local people with tents, blankets, hygiene kits, winter clothing, food, baby food and toiletries, among other things.
